Dear Service Dog Diary,
Today was a good day. Finn and I went to get labs drawn! It was a huge success and was a very uplifting experience. Sometimes service training can get frustrating between slow progress and bad days. Good days and positive training sessions are times to cling to.
We got to the hospital where I get my labs drawn and Finn did a great “heel” right out of the car with minimal pulling. He gets a bit excited when we go somewhere new, so this was great! This is a place he has never been before. For those of you that have been following for a while, you know that one of our biggest hurdles has been Finn’s fear of smooth flooring. He had zero issues with the linoleum flooring! Another huge success!
The bulk of our time was spent waiting in the waiting area. (Duh.)
Finn had a perfect “stay” the whole time we were waiting. He even immediately laid in front of my legs without direction or cue! It’s moments like these that remind me that progress is progress whether we see it immediately or not. We worked a ton on “focus” and “leave it” as people constantly walked past. This was an awesome place for us to get some very positive training in.
When we went back to get my labs drawn, he was a little nervous of the linoleum flooring in the back area. It was only noticeable to me, though. I directed him to lay next to the chair that I had to sit in and commanded him into a “down-stay”. He remained in the position until I released him when I was done! The only hiccup he had was that he knew when we were leaving and stood up before I released him. So I put him back in a “down-stay” while I gathered my bags and then released him.
As a treat for doing such a good job at the lab, I let Finn run around with his best friend for a bit before I had to head back to work. I am also washing Finn’s service vest for the first time. I can’t believe I’ve had it for almost a year now!
